Max and Ella in Africa – Part 2

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Dear Pandas,

On Wednesday we told you all about how we winded up in the middle of the desert. We lost our tourist group in a sandstorm and wandered around until Ella saw a waving Carl Caruso.

We were simply knackered after spending so many hours wandering aimlessly. With the last of our energy, we rode our camel over to the oasis, but as we came closer, everything started to get a bit blurry. We realized it was all a mirage. This happens in the desert when the sand is very hot and the sun reflects light onto the surface, making it look like water.

Eventually, the mirage disappeared. Our camel was at the end of his rope and decided to simply plop down in the sand. They are stubborn creatures, after all. We were horribly tired, so we layed ourselves on the camel, using its two humps as pillows. A bit of time passed until we felt something cool. There was a shadow covering us. I opened my eyes and noticed there was a figure hovering over us. Carl Caruso?

“Who is Carl Caruso?” someone asked. “And what in heaven’s name are you two panda bears doing in the middle of the desert?” It turns out that this man was a nomad. Nomads are people who travel from place to place without any permanent home. They don’t tend to stay anywhere for too long.

He gave us some water and we drank our fill. We were so relieved! And naturally, we gave some to our trusty camel too.

I think Ella was still suffering from some heat exposure. She kept blabbering on about Carl Caruso…

I don’t even remember that! You a bit jealous, Max?

Of course not! I was just happy to be saved. Today we’re leaving the desert for good and are heading south, towards Zimbabwe. We sent you a postcard. Good luck finding it!

Be good Pandas,

Max and Ella

P.S. – Okay, here’s a hint for the postcard: it’s located in a relatively new Panfu locale.
