Dear little Pandas,
As you may know, it is possible to play Panfu in many languages. You chat with your friends here in .com in English, but other Pandas from Germany, Spain and other countries chat with their friends in their own languages.
Today, I want to talk to you all about languages. Each language has an alphabet, most European languages are written with the so-called Latin alphabet, this is the alphabet we use, it begins with ‘a’ and ends with ‘z’. Languages like Chinese, Greek, Hebrew and Russian have their own alphabet, for example in Russian, the word “Panda” in written as: панда, and in Chinese: 熊猫 That looks far more difficult than writing with our letters doesn’t it!
There are more than 6800 languages spoken around the world! Out of these, 2261 languages are also written languages. Most languages are ‘living languages’, meaning they are still spoken today. There are also ‘dead languages’ like Latin, these languages are not spoken, but may still be used in specific areas, medical sciences for example. The world’s most spoken language is Mandarin, spoken in China! Then comes Spanish and English is third. Within Europe, German is the most commonly spoken language.
There are also very small languages. “Udihe” is spoken in Siberia by only one hundred people. Some countries have lots of different languages, Papua New Guinea has 832 alone! There are also new languages being created, such as Esperanto which has been developed by scientists so it’s easy for everyone to learn.
The word Panda is almost the same in many languages,
I want you to learn the word “friend” in a number of languages:
Friend in German: Freund
Friend in Spanish: Amigo
Friend in French: Ami
Friend in Finnish: Ystävä
Friend in Turkish: Arkadaş
Some languages are more similar than others. You can see that English and German are alike; this is because both of these are “Germanic” languages. Spanish and French are also similar; these languages belong to the group of languages called “Romance” languages or “Roman Languages”.
There are people in this world who are able to speak 7 or 8 languages fluently. This may be because they have lived in several different countries. Our Pandas often speak the language of the country where they were born. If your parents are from a different country to where you are living now, it is likely that they will teach you’re their language. The language you are taught by your parents is often called your ‘mother tongue’ language.
Do you learn a language at school? Most children that are not living in an English speaking country tend to learn English from a young age at school. When people from all around the world come together, they often speak different languages. As most people have learnt English, they can almost always use this as the way to communicate so it is an important language to learn.
Older Pandas tend to learn German, French or Spanish. Sometimes it can seem boring at school to learn another language, but Panda’s…I can assure you that later on you will be more than happy when you can communicate in another language! You can use another language when you go on holiday and of course when you meet people from other countries!
All week we have been talking about all of your different countries and all the languages all of you clever Pandas can speak! Now my only question is how have you managed to learn to speak so many? At school, from your parents, from playing Panfu? Let me know in the comments!
Love and Peace
